fostering innovation in the local tech scene for empowering developers

Innovation: What Is it?

Innovation: What Is it?

We can define innovation as anything that enhances our processes, projects or understanding of the problems. An individual or a group can do it.

Innovations are characterized by creating solutions that do not simply solve the issue but rather increase the perception and provide tools to manage the new perception.

Innovation is a catalyst for positive change. It forces people to question the solutions they have in place, and it allows local software engineers to work on a particular problem with support from their business.

Many large companies have made fortunes from innovation projects. Examples include Google News, Amazon Web Services, which began as a small project within a South African Office, and Netflix's digital transformation.

Define An Innovation Framework

Define An Innovation Framework

To begin, we needed to define what innovation would look like in our organization. We then combined some great rules learned from other studies on this topic:

  • Innovative thinking is not just for the business world. It should also be used to solve problems and find solutions in everyday life.
  • Innovation is more than a technical or economic process. It must also have a human dimension where everyone can share their creative ideas, desires, and needs.
  • We should promote innovation because it is difficult to find organizations with the right organizational structure to encourage this.
  • Implementing a culture that encourages innovation is the most effective way for an organization to adapt to market fluctuations and increase longevity.

After identifying some of the tools that we would use to help, we then identified a few more: The next step was to define the building blocks for the framework.

  • Every Team Should Spend 10% Of Their Time On Innovation

This could be done by allowing each team to spend 10% of their time on innovation every Friday (two weeks). The DM manages this time, which is used to collect ideas, opinions and areas for improvement.

It also allows people to create Spikes, POCs or discuss with other stakeholders. Managers and software engineers need to include this in their objectives to avoid the roadmaps taking up the entire available time.

  • Sharing Forum

This is an event we organize every month that lasts 2 hours. It asks everyone to share ideas, reviews of processes, business cases, and projects that have come out of that 10% time for innovation.

It also allows other teams to utilize the generic solution for cost reduction/monitoring/performance, infrastructure, etc.

  • Governance Committee

We need to understand the advantages and feasibility of new projects as soon as they are launched. The Governance Committee comprises 5-10 people, with one Subject Matter expert per team.

It is a gate that guarantees governance in our area, technical advice, and an architectural review for every project.

  • New Initiatives Demand Forum

The Commerce and Content Principal POs review the business case and assign it a value based on savings or profits.

They then prioritize this initiative within our global roadmap.

These blocks are described in detail before the work that follows this cycle:

  • The idea comes from the innovation period within the team, where the project is developed after a thorough analysis or even a proof of concept.
  • The next step is the stage of sharing, where you can add your comments or join the project.
  • The Governance Committee then reviews and approves the proposed solution, allowing the move to the next phase.
  • New Initiative Forum then quantifies a project's value and suggests the most appropriate time for marketing and the highest priority.
  • The engineers can then work on their innovation, construct it, and take it into production.
