What It's Like To Be A GDE And Becoming A Google Developer Expert

It can be overwhelming to become a GDE or get the tag of an expert! This is a great way to boost your confidence, and it can also help you with your career.

It is like a badge given by Google for the best and most knowledgeable people in a particular technology. It can be intimidating but also adventurous! A small Don't try to be a GDE. Let it find you! Many experts started using Flutter nearly three years ago.

The main things that helped you to become a GDE were persistence, practice, and willingness.

At first, experts and other people had a hard time learning because there was no good content to guide them. Documentation and YouTubers that had created Flutter content were the only sources.

The community wasn't very active, making it difficult to learn. Continued to learn and practice by creating apps, learning different packages, etc. Attending Flutter events soon led to speaking at them.

How To Become A Google Development Expert

How To Become A Google Development Expert

You can't become a GDE by applying anywhere. On their website, there is no button to submit your resume. It's a badge of honor.

It's an honor badge on your online profile picture. This recognition is earned.

The process is essentially two steps:

  • Expertise in Google technologies such as Android, Web Firebase, Flutter Assistant, Google Play, etc.

You don't have to be "the expert"; you just need enough knowledge to help others with their problems or you can hire android expert.

  • Please help as many people as possible.

You can do this by writing online content or creating YouTube videos or contributing to open-source projects or answering questions on StackOverflow or producing podcasts or giving talks or workshops at universities, events, and meetups, or organizing events in your area.

You must do all of these things to the point that Google or another GDE will notice your work and nominate you for a GDE.

The most difficult part is getting nominated.

After you receive an invitation to apply to GDE, submit the form. You will need to list all your contributions, such as talks, videos, articles, or open-source projects, in this form.

Calculate the impact that you've had on people. How many people have read your articles? How many people have watched your videos? Google will review the form after it is submitted.

You can apply again after six months if you are rejected. If you are accepted, then you will be asked to interview.

There is no application form or portal to apply to be a GDE. Instead, you become one when an existing GDE reviews your work and refers it to the Google team.

The process begins after the candidate has been referred.

  1. Eligibility Round.
  2. Community Interview.
  3. Product Interview.

Eligibility: The Google team will verify all contributions you've made in the Round of Eligibility.

It usually takes longer as the Google team has to verify all contributions. You will receive a second-round mail once you have qualified for the Eligibility Round.

Community Interview: This was very interesting for me. Many people had the opportunity to speak with an Apache Beam expert, one of the first users.

This interview is designed to understand your motivations for the application, how you have impacted Google technologies within the community, and whether or not you fit into the program. The Community Round will be taken by a GDE active in your category. This round focuses primarily on contributions from the Community.

Nevertheless, some technical questions will be asked to test your knowledge.

Product Interview: An interview with a Googler- Final validation to ensure you understand Google products for the area you are applying.

You must be able to demonstrate your knowledge! The last round is the Product Interview. Anyone from the Google team can take this round. This round is focused on your technical knowledge, communication style, and general things.

If you're selected for this final interview, you will receive a congratulations email! You must sign an NDA and complete some legal paperwork to become a GDE.

You get to meet Google employees and GDEs at the end of the process, which is a great experience! You can always reach out to GDEs if you have any questions or concerns during the process.

They will give you advice and tips! These interviews can vary depending on the person. You should prepare well. You will receive an email similar to the one on this article's front cover after you have successfully completed both interviews.
